An Eternal Inheritance

An Eternal Inheritance

By Not Known

As parents, we desire to leave an inheritance for our children, and we try our best to fulfil it. We buy an education-cum-insurance plan so that we may send our child/children to university. With a degree or post-graduate degree, we hope that they can earn a living and secure their future. We open bank accounts for them. We hope to pass on something for them, in the event of a financial crisis.  We work hard to earn money so that we can build a strong financial fortress around them. Well, I suppose it is not wrong for us to do so as it is just wise for us to plan the best for the future of our children.

However, what about spiritual inheritance? Have we thought of leaving behind a spiritual inheritance for our children that is of eternal value, or a spiritual shelter that they can take refuge in when they face their future life’s storms? Have we put in efforts in leaving behind a spiritual inheritance for them like what we do in terms of financial security? The Bible says, “In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge” (Proverbs 14:26). All that we invest in — our personal relationship with the Lord — should provide a spiritual shelter for our children.

In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul acknowledges the impact that a mother can have on her children, by mentioning Lois, Timothy’s grandmother; and Eunice, his mother. Paul’s mentioning of these women is interesting because of the personal influence on the spiritual journey of Timothy. Paul readily and willingly acknowledged that the seeds of Timothy’s faith were planted by these two women. We know very little about Lois and Eunice, but we can picture them praying with young Timothy, telling him the simple Bible stories, teaching him the life-changing truths of God’s Word, and introducing him to the leaders of the early church. All of us know that it is a challenging task being a mother, but the rewards of a faithful mother are great. Think of how Timothy’s mother and grandmother must have felt to see him blossom as a leader in the work of Jesus!

Let us pursue faith. Put in our time and effort in strengthening the foundation of our faith. And seize the opportunity to pass on our Christian faith to our next generation and beyond. Thus when Jesus comes again, he will find faith on earth, and in our family as well (Luke 18:8).

Only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the molding of character in her children.  ~ Billy Graham
