An Underrated Virtue That Shines…

When you compliment someone, what are some typical words that you may use? Intelligent, wise, strong, capable… and the list goes on.

For many people, the word “gentle” will not come to mind. However, gentleness is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23). This virtue shines like gold and is precious in God’s eyes.

What then is gentleness? It is not weakness. On the contrary, gentleness comes from a strong, stable and solid character that flows from humility. Gentleness requires self-control to exude a soft touch in dealing with people.

A gentle person does not feel superior to others. Instead, they care for others even if they have been wronged by those whom they care for. A gentle person shows empathy, kindness and tenderness towards the weaknesses of others. When speaking uncomfortable truth to someone, a gentle person will do so in truth and love, thereby conveying the message appropriately.

Why should we be gentle? Well, the main reason is because our God is gentle. Although He is the perfect, and most majestic and powerful being in the universe, He treats us with gentleness to the point of sending Jesus to save us.

In fact, Jesus showed perfect gentleness in his interaction with others. For example, in Matt 11:29, he says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

And Jesus’ words were matched by his action. He was gentle and compassionate towards repentant tax collectors and prostitutes. He welcomed children with gentleness and love. Although Peter denied him three times, Jesus gently restored and commissioned him to care for the flock. He showed gentleness to the Samaritan woman at the well even though Samaritans were despised by the Jews (John 4:4-30).

Therefore, since Jesus is gentle, we should also try to be as well!

How then can we cultivate gentleness in us? By ourselves, we can do nothing. But if we ask God to cultivate in us the spirit of gentleness and we are humble and willing enough to be moulded by Him, then gentleness will become more and more a part of our character as the years go by.

So, will you ask God to cultivate gentleness in your life?
