How do we recognise miracles as miracles? For often even when one happens right before our eyes and still we may not recognise it. Or for that matter, even when we do recognise it, we may not believe that it is real.
Miracles are happening every day. However, with our sceptical mindsets and with our prejudices, miracles simply pass us by. Life itself is a miracle. Life-change is another ongoing miracle. In fact, many simple things in life are miracles that are not recognised or accepted as such. Commitment to God is a miracle too. Commitment is that which makes life-change real. Commitment is needed in marriage. And successful marriages are miracles. Employers say commitment is desired in those they hire. Coaches say commitment is essential to a winning team. Winning are miracles too.
Paul says commitment is necessary in the Christian life: “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship” (Rom 12:1).
What marriages, businesses, sports teams, and the church need today is committed people to ensure that miracles happen.
God is looking for people who are totally dedicated to Jesus Christ. The definition of commitment is the word, alignment. It points to aligning motives, resources, priorities, and goals to accomplish mission, a specific task, or to follow a specific person. Total commitment is the channel through which God’s best and biggest blessings flow to His children to others.
With these blessings, they become miracles.
Yet, the biggest difficulty is that commitment is not readily recognised or understood. Few know how it works.
Look again at what Paul is saying here. He talks about the command which is to offer. Then he mentioned that we have to be motivated by the “mercies of God.” Finally, the rationale behind it is that it is a spiritual act of worship.
Commitment is a command: instruction to be obeyed. It is ongoing, intentional, fully comprehending the implications and sacrifices involved.
The motivation is a heartfelt emotional response that come from the exhortation to obey. It is an internal outflow of gratitude to the gracious Saviour and Redeemer who died to give us eternal life.
Finally, that act of spiritual worship is the end goal, the spiritual reward of presenting ourselves as worthy offering to the Saviour.
In short, miracles only happen when we make the offer by fully surrendering ourselves to the Lordship of Christ because of who God is and what He has done for us. This has eternal consequence and is costly. But the end result is fully worth it.
